After two weeks exhibition in the RPG Park at the Resonance NoR sim, the virtual part of the RL information-art installation ‘DO NOT FEED (Meta.Live.Nu presents DFM RTV INT)’ has moved to the virtual Dam Square at the Amsterdam sim. In this totally different Second Life enviroment, the iron cage with Eveline Schoonhoven and Ad Breda is attracting quite some attention straight away.

De term vortex (orkaan, draaikolk) refereert aan de overdaad aan beeld waarmee we worden geconfronteerd. Video Vortex is een expositie van gepersonaliseerd beeld.
Amsterdam, 18 dec. ‘Curator for one day is Anna Houwen’ staat er op het beeldscherm. Daaronder staat een lijst videokunstwerken om aan te klikken en op een muur te projecteren in Montevideo, het Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst. „Hmmm”, peinst een bezoeker hardop, „Anna Houwen, die ken ik niet.” En dat is precies het punt. Als kunstliefhebber heeft Houwen vanaf haar eigen computer een dagprogramma mogen maken voor de tentoonstelling Video Vortex II, samengesteld uit de online archieven van Montevideo.
Fifteen minutes of fame
De expositie, die vrijdag in Amsterdam werd geopend, is een reactie van mediakunstenaars op het fenomeen Web 2.0 en daaruit vloeiende websites als Youtube en Myspace. Die nieuwe generatie internet is een democratisch en participerend medium, waarin elke gebruiker, als heer en meester van zijn virtuele domein, zijn fifteen minutes of fame kan hebben. De instant beroemdheid van Anna Houwen is daarom vergelijkbaar met die van het fictieve webpersonage lonelygirl15 en YouTube-zangeres Esmée Denters.
Het gemak waarmee iemand, met behulp van een digitale camera en een internetverbinding, zijn verhaal op internet kan vertellen, is ook onderwerp van het project Myth Engine, te zien op de tentoonstelling. De Australische kunstenares Nancy Mauro-Flude houdt een fotoblog bij, waarvan ze de foto’s achter elkaar projecteert in de expositieruimte. Daarnaast toont ze een zwart computerscherm met in witte letters onophoudelijk het serververkeer, zoals de naam van het ge-uploade beeld en de hoeveelheid mb’s.
Het werk van Mauro-Flude toont volgens Annet Dekker een veranderende manier van werken. „Het proces is belangrijker aan het worden dan het eindproduct. Met de komst van digitale fotografie en video is ons collectieve geheugen steeds meer een database aan het worden.”
Park TV
Voor zijn Openbare Televisie Skulptuur remixte Jaap de Jonge filmpjes van Park TV, een kunstenaarsinitiatief dat videowerken maakt en verspreidt. Elk van de 32 filmpjes wordt afgespeeld achter een glazen kogel. Deze prisma’s vervormen het oorspronkelijke beeld en creëren zo nieuwe, caleidoscopische – vaak psychedelische en organische – beelden.
Samensteller Dekker plaatste de onafhankelijke, kritische mediakunst van deze tijd ook in een historische context: ze stelt zichzelf de vraag in hoeverre deze democratiserende beweging van het internet lijkt op die van radio en televisie. Dekker: „Vooral in Nederland en België zijn altijd groepen videomakers geweest die op radio en tv uitzonden. Die open collectieven zijn in zekere zin de voorlopers van Web 2.0. Rabotnik bijvoorbeeld, of Park bracht altijd gratis werken uit. Die open, anarchistische werkwijze zie je ook bij Web 2.0.”
Diezelfde collectieven, overigens allemaal aanwezig op de expositie, maken nu content voor de nieuwe platforms. Dekker: „Park maakt bijvoorbeeld filmpjes voor de PlayStation Portable, en DFM.NU zendt zelfs uit in Second Life. Ze draaien daar filmpjes in hun zelf gebouwde artist space, maar ook bijvoorbeeld live streams uit cultureel centrum De Balie.”
Participatie
Naast het tonen van kunstprojecten gaat het Dekker natuurlijk om de daadwerkelijke participatie, om het ‘zelf maken’. „Maar dan niet zoals het online al gebeurt,” zegt zij. “Sites als YouTube hebben strikte kaders, één format dat iedereen volgt, puur uit gemak. We willen laten zien dat er nog veel meer mogelijk is.”
Wie helemaal niets voelt voor participeren, kan net doen alsof: elke bezoeker van de tentoonstelling krijgt bij binnenkomst een usb-stick waarop hij of zij direct kunstvideo’s en speciaal gecomponeerde ringtones kan downloaden voor op de mobiele telefoon.
‘We feel fine’
Het ‘virtuele domein’ van de internetgebruiker bestaat meestal uit een gepersonaliseerde pagina op Hyves of MySpace, een aantal filmpjes op YouTube of een fotoalbum op Flickr. „Men zet de meest intieme dingen online”, zegt Video Vortex-samensteller Annet Dekker, „maar beseft niet dat de hele wereld het kan zien.”
Die publieke intimiteit vormde de inspiratie voor het werk We Feel Fine van Jonathan Harris and Sep Kamvar uit de eerste tentoonstelling van Video Vortex, de voorloper van de pas geopende expositie.
Speciale software zoekt op internet naar de woorden ‘I feel’ of ‘I’m feeling’ en registreert op www.wefeelfine.org de gevoelens (15.000 tot 20.000 per dag), samen met – indien mogelijk – leeftijd, geslacht, plek en lokale weersomstandigheden van de auteur.

Just after closing time of the N.I.M.K. museum in Amsterdam (18:00 CET / SL 9 am PST) a gang of french speaking demons appeared in the :::RPG::: Park at the Resonance NoR sim in Second Life. One of them suddenly started shooting his gun at the passive, unarmed and naked avatars inside the ‘DO NOT FEED’ iron cage. Then they dissapeared quickly. Ad Breda and Eveline Schoonhoven were laying on the floor sedated for several minutes, before they revived.

This museum building of the Nederlands Instituut voor de MediaKunst at the ”Emperors-canal” in the historic city centre, is the location of the Video Vortex.2 media-art exhibition till 3 feb. 2008.
The physical part of the interactive ‘DO NOT FEED’ (Meta.Live.Nu presents DFM RTV INT) installation is exhibited in the room behind the two blinded windows at the first floor.
The virtual part is exhibited at the :::RPG::: Park, at the Resonance NoR sim in Second Life.
