True Stories presents: Jorien van Nes and Femke Wolting’s fascinating insight into online virtual worlds. Second Life, World of Warcraft, Metaplace, U World – all virtual worlds where the user can create their own paradise, far removed from real life. People can create societies that range from the democratic to the dictatorial, have avatars that resemble their ideal and can engage in actions that their real life personality would never dream of doing, from cyber-sex to virtual crime. But who creates these worlds and are they the right people to be crafting idealised societies that pretend to address and solve the inadequacies of the real world?
The Internet TV premiere was: june 2009, Metaworld2
.
The Netherlands TV premiere was: Thursday 30 july 2009, Nederland 2

Last days of ‘Dadamachinima’ expo Amsterdam ends with Machinima Festival
MMIF 2009
MaMachinima International Festival
28th february 2009 – Free entrance
PLANETART, Wibautstraat 150, Amsterdam (NL) + RastaViews sim (SL)
‘MMIF 2009′ is the first edition of an annual global film festival in cyberspace and simultaneously in Amsterdam (NL). In Amsterdam MMIF 2009 will happen at the very last day of the ‘Dadamachinima’ media-art exhibition by PLANETART about avant-garde videogame modification, started 18 December 2008.
The MMIF is initiated by the Dutch filmer Chantal Harvey. The MMIF is a celebration of machinima: a new cinematic art form, created with 3D virtual worlds and online computergames. All the actors (avatars) are individually operated real-time by real people while movie scenes are directed and recorded. On 3D web platforms like Second Life, directors can even build complete movie sets for relatively low costs. MMIF 2009 aims to bring machinima to a wider audience, online and offline.
Over forty short machinima films are screened at MMIF 2009, from all over the world. Machinima created wih all 3D web platforms and online games are welcome.
At the MaMachinima Theatre in Second Life, the artists and directors from many countries will be present in real time to talk about their creations. And to meet other machinimatographers and an international audience online.
The audience in Amsterdam can view the machinima films live via Second Life on a big screen at the auditorium of the PLANETART artspace in the former Volkskrantbuilding.
Free wireless internet and electricity provided for audience laptops.

It promises to be a very interesting Mediamatic Beauty Parlour #06 this thursday: Artist, writer and engineer Mark Meadows (aka Pighed Stonecutter) presents his new book: I, Avatar
At Club 11, on the 11th floor of the Post CS building, Oosterdokskade 5, Amsterdam, NL. Reservations via mediamatic.net/pighed
An exhibition with Mark Meadows work can be seen at PLANETART, Weteringschans 179, Amsterdam.

What is an avatar? Why are there nearly a billion of them, and who is using them? Do avatars impact our real lives, or are they just video game conceits? Is an avatar an inspired rendering of its creator’s inner self, or is it just one among millions of anonymous vehicles clogging the online freeways? Can we use our avatars to really connect with people, or do they just isolate us? And as we become more like our avatars do they become more like us?
In I, Avatar, Mark Stephen Meadows answers some of these questions, but more importantly, he raises hundreds of others in his exploration of avatars and the fascinating possibilities they hold. His examination of avatars through the lenses of sociology, psychology, politics, history, and art, he will change the way you look at even a simple online profile and revolutionize the idea of avatars as part of our lives, whether first or second.
“As someone that has worked with virtual worlds for over 15 years, I’m only now beginning to see the weak signals and evidence of high enough technical, social, financial, and visual caliber in the work that it is attracting people. Millions of them.”
“When you look at avatars, please think of these people as settlers. You can see them more clearly if you think of them as early traders and frontiersmen who are colonizing a new world.”
Mark Meadows
.
“Mark Meadow’s virtual creatures are not your next door neighbours–or are they? Leaving behind 1990s cyberculture and its underground aesthetics, with Meadows we descend into a maelstrom of Identity 2.0 in which business, leasure, sexuality, labour and fashion melt into one.”
Geert Lovink, Media Theorist, Net Critic and Activist.

it was clear basra was wounded. i couldnt tell where the wound was (sometimes its hard to tell what is wrong when it is so goddam big, or when we are so goddam small), but i could tell it was there. basra was wounded, but it was also still very alive. people were selling vegetables, water, generators, tools, services, and friends were meeting on sidewalks, talking. i found an art gallery that was tucked into the basement of a bombed out admin building. these guys had set it up and were selling canvases out of it. one painting i found was by a painter named Manal Kheroulah. she’s a 23-year old painter at the basra college of fine arts. i like that.

8 februari 2008 - F.E.M., Hogeschool Utrecht – 12:30-18:00
A report in Dutch at upthevortex.nl. Cellphone photo by Damien Simons.
Collectively we hope to sketch a clear picture of the bussiness and society opportunities of virtual worlds. Second Life is the example for the moment. From a perspective of economy, community and society a vision of the future is the ultimate goal of this convention.
The above was quoted and translated from VirtualWorlds08.nl :
Gezamenlijk hopen wij op 8 Februari 2008 een helder beeld te schetsen van de zakelijke en maatschappelijke mogelijkheden van virtuele werelden. Hierbij is Second Life exemplarisch. Vanuit maatschappelijke, zakelijke en sociale invalshoek is een toekomstvisie het ultieme doel van het symposium.
What was lacking this day. in our humble opinion, was a central panel debate, with a possibility of audience interaction.
So no consensus vision about the future of virtual worlds / metaverses was established. A missed chance unfortunately…
