‘MMIF 2011′ is the third edition of an annual film festival in 3D cyberspace with an interactive cinema screening in physical space (‘RL’). Audiences can follow some of the MMIF happenings live via the web.
The MMIF is a celebration of Machinima: films created in virtual worlds and video games. On 3D Internet platforms like Second Life® for instance, any kind of movie set can be built at very low cost. The MMIF aims to bring Machinima, a new cinematic art form, to a wider audience. Films by professional machinima producers and by those who are just starting out will be screened at MMIF 2011. Machinima directors and avatar actors from all over the world are present in real time at the virtual theatre in SL. These ’Machinimatographers’ will present over fifty short films and discuss their work in front of a live global audience of viewers.
Audiences in Amsterdam can follow the MMIF event live, projected on a big screen in Club Karlsson at Keizersgracht, one of the most famous canals in Holland. Several participating machinimatographers will be present. Visitors can bring their own portable computers to interact with the show on the big screen. Free (wireless) internet and electricity is provided.
Free entrance at Club Karlsson, however tickets are required. Reservations must be made via http://MMIF.org . The amount of tickets at the door is very limited! Full = FULL!

18 april: Boom Pearls – Understanding art in online spaces

http://www.boompearls.com/?page_id=332

Press release, talks on Boom Pearls in Second Life

Saturday april 18, at 18 – 21 (gmt+1) four positions for understanding art in online spaces as Second Life (SL) will be presented to discuss how art practice in an online world is part of Real Life (RL) and the art world. The talks is part of the curated series Boom Pearls and can be seen offline at YOUin3d.com, Hannoversche Straße 3, Berlin, and online at Boom Pearls in Second Life, http://slurl.com/SecondLife/Phyllira/169/139/90.

Tommy Støckel and Pernille With Madsen both participate with art projects in Boom Pearls.
Jan Northoff and Joachim Stein both uses SL for media productions without necessarily seeing it as part of the art world.

Tommy Støckel will talk about his practice. For this project he considered how an artistic practice can be carried out in SL, where the content of the virtual world is build by the users. His installation, Primitives Collection Field (2007), consisted of freebies build by other users in SL, thereby focusing on what makes SL different from the rest of the world.

Pernille With Madsens installation Endless Structure (2009), which can still be seen, is inspired of the vertigo experienced in the meeting with reality and different constructions or architecture. The possibility to emerge in her scripted construction is another example of artworks by participating artists who are all new in SL. With Madsen will talk about her projects in and outside SL.

Jan Northoff is one of the two founders of newBERLIN, a true to scale interpretation of the german capital in SL. After working with sculpture and massive installations in Real Life, he created a virtual city with a living community of Citizens Friends and Creators of the online international melting pot. So he also invites artists to catch up with the latest 3D realtime technology and online art scenes.

Joachim Stein will talk about the Terms of Service as basis for practice in Second Life. Stein is an experimental thinker and artist, who challenges concepts of reality, play and work. He improvises and constructs narratives by doing what seems absurd and by using found situations and constellations. In 2007 Stein initiated and helped realize a TV documentary about people’s lives in Second Life. During Ars Electronica 2007 he provided workout, diet and medication plans that helped people achieve their Second Live avatar’s body in real life. In his latest work he used Second Life as a tool for re-enacting and filming of a court trial about a copyright case he had provoked by deliberately using and altering a digital map without permission.

The talks will be documented and can be seen at boompearls.com after a while.

1 nov.: Physical Virtuality: “What’s the weight of an avatar?”

Humans FEEL  the presence  of  real  avatars  in a  cross-world  interactive  seesaw  installation, connecting  virtual  life  to  our  physical  world.

On saturday the 1st of november, visitors of the NEMO Science Center in Amsterdam will be physically connected to inhabitants of the virtual world Second Life through an intervirtual balancing plateau.

The total weight of avatars standing on the virtual side of the plateau will be calculated and processed along with the weight of all people standing on the physical side of the plateau. This outcome will trigger the synchronised real-time movement of both the hydraulic powered and script controlled side of the plateau, resulting in an experience of indirect physical contact between real and virtual beings.

A two way videoprojection will visually connect the virtual and real-life participants standing on the installation.

27 sept.>5 oct.: Meta.Live.Nu @ Burning Life 2008s,

Meta.Live.Nu was selected by the Burning Life organisation to get land access in order to be present at Burning Life 2008.  On show is the experimental ‘information-art’ installation by Ze Moo:

“Grid Gypsy Camp: Brazil”

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Burning%20Life%20(Tigris)/222/222/22

This cross-reality, information-art installation is our reply to this years Burning Man / Burning Life theme “The American Dream”. It is partly inspired by the Burning Man festival, partly inspired by the Terry Gilliam movie Brazil’ (1984), and partly inspired by the article Avatars consume as much electricity as Brazilians” by Nicholas Carr. Other inspirations into this interactive mixed media art piece come from various real global social, political and enviromental issues.

Next to this, Meta.Live.Nu at BL 2008 will also present some sculptures by invited artist Herman Bergson.

Meta.Live.Nu special thanks: Tooter Claxton, Arcadia Asylum, Cel Edman, Amanda Dench, Talia Tokugawa, Talen Morgan, Luv Ock, Jamal Mfume, Ryan Linden, DFM RTV INT, De Balie Media, Freeteam, DDS,

21 feb.: I, Avatar

21 februari 18:00 CET:

It promises to be a very interesting Mediamatic Beauty Parlour #06 this thursday: Artist, writer and engineer Mark Meadows (aka Pighed Stonecutter) presents his new book: I, Avatar

At Club 11, on the 11th floor of the Post CS building, Oosterdokskade 5, Amsterdam, NL. Reservations via mediamatic.net/pighed

An exhibition with Mark Meadows work can be seen at PLANETART, Weteringschans 179, Amsterdam.

I, Avatar

blog.mediacatalyst.com/pivot/entry.php?id=354

What is an avatar? Why are there nearly a billion of them, and who is using them? Do avatars impact our real lives, or are they just video game conceits? Is an avatar an inspired rendering of its creator’s inner self, or is it just one among millions of anonymous vehicles clogging the online freeways? Can we use our avatars to really connect with people, or do they just isolate us? And as we become more like our avatars do they become more like us?  pighed

In I, Avatar, Mark Stephen Meadows answers some of these questions, but more importantly, he raises hundreds of others in his exploration of avatars and the fascinating possibilities they hold. His examination of avatars through the lenses of sociology, psychology, politics, history, and art, he will change the way you look at even a simple online profile and revolutionize the idea of avatars as part of our lives, whether first or second.

 pighed stonecutter

“As someone that has worked with virtual worlds for over 15 years, I’m only now beginning to see the weak signals and evidence of high enough technical, social, financial, and visual caliber in the work that it is attracting people. Millions of them.”

“When you look at avatars, please think of these people as settlers. You can see them more clearly if you think of them as early traders and frontiersmen who are colonizing a new world.”

Mark Meadows

.

boar.com/books/avatars

“Mark Meadow’s virtual creatures are not your next door neighbours–or are they? Leaving behind 1990s cyberculture and its underground aesthetics, with Meadows we descend into a maelstrom of Identity 2.0 in which business, leasure, sexuality, labour and fashion melt into one.”

Geert Lovink, Media Theorist, Net Critic and Activist.

.

After the first attack on Iraq, Mark Meadows hitchhiked from Kuwait to Baghdad in 2003, wanting to experience first hand what the mass media filters might not reveal to the public.

it was clear basra was wounded. i couldnt tell where the wound was (sometimes its hard to tell what is wrong when it is so goddam big, or when we are so goddam small), but i could tell it was there. basra was wounded, but it was also still very alive. people were selling vegetables, water, generators, tools, services, and friends were meeting on sidewalks, talking. i found an art gallery that was tucked into the basement of a bombed out admin building. these guys had set it up and were selling canvases out of it. one painting i found was by a painter named Manal Kheroulah. she’s a 23-year old painter at the basra college of fine arts. i like that.

 .
This video shows a fascinating interview with Mark Meadows. Produced at Xmedia lab, Singapore, 18 november 2005.

WHEN MAN MET ZE. Patrick Lighty at Video Vortex, photo by Silvertje

During the Video Vortex Conference in Amsterdam in january, Patrick Lichty (Man Michinaga) was visiting the ‘DO NOT FEED (Meta.Live.Nu presents DFM RTV INT)’ installation at the VideoVortex.2 exhibition.

In the physical exhibition space of the N.I.M.K., Patrick Lichty took control of the naked Ad Breda avatar and escaped the cage at De Dam square in SL-Amsterdam. Ad Breda then went to do an spontanious streaker intervention at the IAM Columbia Isle, the sim of the Columbia College Interactive Arts and Media (IAM) department in Chicago, Illinois. Ze Moo was observing how Ad Breda would survive this without a sim-ban… Read more about this happening at the SecondFront.blogspot
